Frequently asked questions
What types of hearing aids are available?
Hearing aids typically fall into three main styles: behind-the-ear, in-the-ear and bespoke completely-in-canal models. A hearing specialist will usually recommend a style based on your hearing levels, ear anatomy, dexterity, comfort preferences and the listening situations you want to improve. The aim is to match the device to your needs and make sure it can be fitted, adjusted and supported properly over time, not simply choose the smallest option.
How do I know if I need a hearing test?
A hearing test is worth booking if you are missing parts of conversation, finding speech harder to follow in background noise, relying more on subtitles, increasing TV volume, or noticing ringing or buzzing in your ears. It is also sensible if family members have started commenting on your hearing. If you experience sudden hearing loss over a very short timeframe, treat it as urgent and seek immediate medical assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
Not sure? Why not book a free hearing test and discuss with one of our experts.
How often should I get my hearing tested?
A yearly hearing test is a common schedule, particularly if you are over 50, have a history of hearing loss, are exposed to noise at work or have persistent symptoms such as tinnitus. Regular testing creates a baseline and helps a specialist spot meaningful changes early, so any next steps are based on evidence rather than assumption.
What is endoscopic microsuction ear wax removal and how is it different from traditional methods?
Endoscopic microsuction is a syringe-free approach that uses controlled suction to remove wax while the ear canal is viewed continuously with an endoscope. The endoscope provides clear visual guidance throughout the procedure, which supports accuracy and helps keep the process as gentle as possible. It can also be suitable in situations where other methods are not appropriate, subject to clinical assessment.
Can you see children, and what age do you accept?
Yes, children can be seen, but appointment depend on age, ear development and whether the child can comfortably tolerate examination and any equipment used. An initial consultation is always needed first, and children must be seen by audiologists with the appropriate higher-level audiology qualification. Where appropriate, this can include ear wax removal, but suitability is confirmed case by case. We offer hearing tests and ear wax removals for children.
As a general policy, appointments are typically offered from age 8+. For ear wax removal, children’s ears need to be examined first to see if they are developed enough to support our equipment.
What happens after a hearing test, and how do you decide on next steps?
A specialist-led service should always include a clear explanation of your results and advice tailored to your hearing and everyday listening needs. In some cases, reassurance and occasional monitoring may be all that’s needed. In others, you may benefit from exploring hearing aids.
If hearing aids are likely to help, you can try them first in real-life situations with our free two-week hearing aid trial, so you have time to experience the difference before making any decision.
