If you have never visited a hearing professional before you probably don't know what quite to expect. It's not like going to the Doctors or Dentist as we have all engaged in that from a very young age. Thankfully its usually a pleasant and liberating experience!
Our staff do a wonderful job of explaining the journey from testing to Hearing Aid purchase to our clients at the time of booking. But if you considering a hearing test & the purchase of a private hearing aid and don't know what to expect, read on....
So, what does go on when you visit an Audiologist?
It's completely normal to feel unsure of what to expect during your first audiology appointment.
Most people visit an Audiologist because they know in their heart, that they are not hearing as well as they once did. They have taken the brave step of taking the advice from a specialist within their field.
Audiology Associates are slightly different from some other companies in that we only use fully qualified and accredited Audiologists. Other companies use hearing aid dispensers. What's the difference I hear you ask? The primary difference is their level of training and scope of practice.
Audiologists usually hold a masters degree or doctorate in the field of audiology, and as such have an extensive amount of training in just about everything relating to the ear. By contrast, hearing aid dispensers have primarily on-the-job training in a less formal manner, they assess hearing and provide aftercare for hearing aids.
What do Audiologists Do?
Audiologists are highly trained professionals who specialise in evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing issues related to hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders.
Audiologists use a complete range and variety of tests and procedures to fully evaluate the hearing ability and /or any balance issues of each individual. Our audiologists also fit and dispense hearing aids or other hearing devices.
Your First Appointment
At your first audiology appointment, our Audiologist will want to chat about your hearing history. This will include any relevant medical history, any recent complaints and symptoms you've experienced.
We welcome and encourage you to bring along a close friend or family member to the appointment, as some tests can involve hearing a familiar voice and testing your hearing with that medium. I can also be beneficial to have someone else present to help you communicate with the audiologist and to help remember and write down information.
Audiology Associates will do three main types of tests:
This is where the fun begins and where you will gain categoric results relating to your hearing ability.
Our adult hearing tests are FREE, we run regular clinics in Cardiff, Ystrad Mynach, Abergavenny, Newport & Ebbw Vale. If you are unable to get to clinic we also offer home visits * for your convenience.

Here at Audiology Associates a day does not go buy where we don't treat someone or chat with someone who suffers from Tinnitus. It had been described to us in many ways and everybody's experience is unique;
"Snap, crackle and pop in my ears"
"A buzzing noise"
"Humming , ringing, whooshing"
"An orchestra of the ears"
Tinnitus is extremely common and is reported in all age groups. Around 30% of us will experience it at some point in our lives, it can come and go, however 10% of us live with persistent Tinnitus.
The exact cause is not known and is often thought to be related to exposure to loud noise or stress and anxiety.
During February (6th-12th) The British Tinnitus Society are once again holding their annual Tinnitus Awareness Week.
There are support events all round the county to help anyone who suffers. The Society offers an invaluable service to sufferers and indeed their families and caregivers, in helping them understand all aspects of the impact of Tinnitus and also the therapy choices that are available.
There are also regular information days held around the country.
The next Information day in Wales is being held in Swansea Guild Hall and is FREE of charge.
Feedback from the information days has been wonderful! So why not pop along and learn how to reduce stress, confusion and isolation and cope better with the condition? You can also enjoy a light lunch and refreshments which are provided by the Association, free for all those who attend.

Has your GP stopped syringing / removing Ear Wax? Are you trying to find a clinic to remove your troublesome ear wax in Cardiff, Newport, Abergavenny & beyond. Read on to find out more about our Microsuction Clinics.
Everyone and I mean everyone has earwax!
No one is immune, young or old. Our ears need it, our well being benefits from it. Ear wax is 20 to 50 percent fat, and it coats the ear canal to moisturize it, fight off infection, and help to keep dust, dirt, and other debris from getting deep inside your ear. Most people make enough ear wax for the job required, but many of us simply make too much.
When our ears become congested with wax it can become painful, our hearing becomes muffled, even our balance can be affected. If we are a hearing aid user quite often earwax can build up in the canal to the point of completely blocking it. Hearing aids don't work very well for people with blocked ear canals. They often feedback (whistle) and the user does not get the full benefit of amplification.
Audiology Associates can unblock your ears quickly, safely and gently with our incredible endoscopic microsuction technique. Endoscopic microsuction is far safer than alternative methods, as we have a visual side the ear canal throughout. This process of wax removal is much more gentle procedure than other types of ear wax removal, you can come back far more regularly for treatment, it leaves the ear completely dry.
What is Ear Wax Microsuction?
Microsuction is the safest, most effective way of cleaning wax build up and any obstruction caused by foreign bodies down the ear canal. The procedure uses a sophisticated endoscope which also provides a magnified light source enabling the delicate structures of the ear canal to be viewed throughout the whole procedure.
Ear Wax removal using Microsuction is performed with the aid of an operating microscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids.
Microsuction is a very well tolerated by the majority of people, gives you fast results hence it is much more effective than the traditional wax removal methods. It is also SAFE, as our Audiologist can see the structures inside your ear.
It is very rare that people may need wax softening with ear products, commonly olive oil, typically though, most clients manage to have their ears cleared in one session without any wax pre-treatment.
Microsuction Ear Wax Removal is suitable for:
In safe hands
Safety is paramount and the procedure should always be comfortable and pain free. We use only fully qualified and registered experienced ear care professionals & Audiologists who are additionally trained to the standards set out by their registering body. We have also worked closely with insurance providers to make sure our practitioners and their patients are fully covered.
How much does this procedure cost?
£45 for one ear wax removal and £65 for both ears.
We carry out this procedure in many convenient local ear wax clinics.
Newport are our most popular clinic locations.
Cardiff clinic runs almost every day and all our other clinic have sessions several times a week. Which means we can offer you an appointment without you having to wait weeks.

The bigger picture
