The ear wax removal process
Your appointment is designed to be straightforward, thorough and tailored to your ears. We take the time to understand what is causing the problem, assess your ear health and carry out the most suitable treatment for you.
Treatment options for ear wax removal
01.
Endoscopic Removal
Endoscopic ear wax removal uses an endoscope to give a clear, detailed view of the ear canal during treatment. This allows for accurate removal and can be particularly suitable for patients with perforations or a mastoid cavity.
02.
Irrigation Removal
Irrigation ear wax removal uses a gentle flow of warm water to clear softer wax from the ear canal. It is a syringe-free method and can be an effective option for sensitive ears.
03.
Curettage Removal
Curettage ear wax removal is carried out using a small, curved instrument to remove wax manually. This can be a suitable option for harder wax or for patients with tinnitus or sensitivity to noise.

Ear Wax Removal FAQs
Is ear wax removal painful?
Our ear wax removal is very comfortable, and most patients do not describe it as painful. With endoscopic microsuction, you may notice the sound of the suction and an unusual sensation in the ear, but treatment is quick.
If your ears are especially sensitive, or if you have tinnitus or discomfort around loud sounds, your audiologists will take this into account and help you to choose the most suitable and comfortable treatment for you.
How long does the appointment take and what happens during it?
Appointments are typically around 30 minutes. During that time, your audiologist will ask about your symptoms, hearing history and any relevant medical issues before examining your ears properly.
If ear wax is present, it can then be removed using the most appropriate method for your ears. If ear wax is not the cause of the problem, you will still receive a consultation and, where appropriate, may be offered a free hearing test instead.
How often should I book ear wax removal?
There is no set timescale, as ear wax build-up varies from person to person. Some people only need ear wax removal occasionally, while others find that wax builds up more quickly and benefit from more regular appointments. If this is a recurring issue for you, regular check-ups can help monitor your ears before the wax becomes uncomfortable or starts to affect your hearing.
Can children have ear wax removal?
Children can be seen, but this depends on their age and whether their ears are developed enough for treatment. We generally work to an 8 years+ policy, and each child needs to be examined first to make sure treatment can be carried out safely and comfortably. This is important because ear wax removal in younger patients should only be carried out if their ears are developed enough to support our equipment.
Will both ears be checked and treated in one appointment?
Yes, both ears will be examined and if needed, both can be treated. Your audiologists will assess each ear carefully and decide which method is most suitable based on the type of wax present, your symptoms and your overall ear health. This means your treatment is based on what is right for your ears rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
