The hearing test process
Consultation
We start by talking through what you have noticed – whether that is missing parts of conversation, struggling to follow speech in background noise or turning the TV up more often. Understanding your daily experience helps us tailor the test to you.
Hearing assessment
Your audiologist will carry out a full hearing test, including a check of your ear health and hearing levels. If ear wax is suspected, removal can be arranged before testing to make sure the results are accurate.
Results and next steps
Your audiologist will explain your results clearly and talk you through what they mean. If there is nothing to act on, you’ll be informed. If hearing aids or further support are required, your options will be laid out without pressure.

Hearing Test FAQs
How do I know if I need a hearing test?
Common signs include difficulty following conversation, asking people to repeat themselves, struggling with background noise, increasing the volume on the TV or radio, or noticing tinnitus. If any of these apply, a hearing test is a sensible first step.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take around 60 minutes, including the consultation beforehand and the results discussion at the end.
Does the hearing test hurt?
No. Hearing tests are comfortable and non-invasive. They involve simple listening checks and a brief examination of your ear health.
Will I receive my results on the day?
Yes. Your audiologist will go through your results with you during your appointment and explain what they mean in plain terms.
What happens if I need hearing aids?
If hearing aids are relevant for your hearing loss, your audiologist will explain your options and you can take advantage of a free 2-week, no-obligation trial before committing to anything.
Can children have a hearing test?
Children can be seen subject to clinical assessment, with appointments typically offered from age six upwards. Suitability is confirmed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for more information.
Is sudden hearing loss an emergency?
Yes. If you have experienced a sudden, unexplained drop in hearing, this should be treated as urgent. Please contact your GP or seek immediate medical advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
